Cumbria will be alive to the sound of boat horns this weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee as part of nationwide Ships Salute.
On Saturday 4 June, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, there will be a ‘Ship Salute’ where every vessel, in every UK harbour, marina or waterfront is being asked to sound a simultaneous long loud blast on their horn or whistle at exactly midday (12.00 BST).
Visitors to Windermere Jetty Museum can enjoy the experience aboard one of the historic boats which will be running cruises throughout the day. Anyone walking or driving past the museum on Thursday 2nd June 2022 at 9.45pm might be able to spot the RIBA Stirling shortlisted building lit up purple as part of ‘The Light District’. This is to coincide with the lighting of beacons nationwide and throughout the Commonwealth and be part of the beacon lighting events for HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
From steamboats to cruise liners, frigates to motor cruisers, narrowboats to ferries, all boat owners and operators across the UK are being encouraged to blow their horns!
‘We are delighted to join in this celebration of our nation and Cumbria’s longstanding relationship with waterways and boating. We have welcomed the Royal family to our Lakeland Arts venues over the years, most recently the Duchess of Cambridge, who went out on the lake aboard SL ‘Osprey’. We will have Jubilee themed specials and there is a HMS Little Fleet paper boat making workshop for families on Saturday 4 June,’ Anna Saczek, Head of Visitor Experience, Windermere Jetty Museum.

Every Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and recreational vessel regardless of size, class and category is invited to join the Ships Salute. Pre-registration is not required.
