The Coronation of King Charles is taking place at Westminster Abbey on the 6 May, with a service which will reflect on the present role of the King, as well as looking towards the future. Both our venues, Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house and Windermere Jetty Museum, will be open across the long weekend which marks this historic event.
Starting the weekend off in style, we are delighted to welcome the Steam Boat Association to Windermere Jetty Museum on Friday 5 May as they celebrate with a Coronation Steam. You’ll be able to see the visiting steam boats moored at our jetties.
Over the years we have had the privilege of welcoming King Charles III and several other members of the Royal family to our arts and heritage venues. To celebrate the King’s Coronation, we look back at some of these visits.
On 8 April 2019 we had the pleasure of welcoming his Royal Highness King Charles, who opened the new Windermere Jetty Museum. His Royal Highness took the time to view our exhibition collection. A particular boat of significance was Branksome, a boat which the King sailed aboard during the opening of the Windermere Steamboat Museum in 1977. Today, the Windermere Jetty Museum resides on the same site the Steamboat Museum did. Branksome has historical significance as one of the finest steamboats of its kind and has had the honour of having many Royal passengers, including his Royal Highness Prince Phillip in 1966.
As well as visiting the Windermere Jetty Museum, we have had the pleasure of welcoming the new King to another one of our sites. In 2001, his Royal Highness King Charles, visited Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house. During this trip, he explored the house and spoke with ceramic artist Magdalene Odundo, whose clay works were on show at the time.
