The Lake District’s historic Arts & Crafts house, Blackwell, is set to host an illuminating talk on Victorian designer William De Morgan, presented by Sarah Hardy, the Director of the De Morgan Museum. The event will take place on 5 September, offering attendees a unique opportunity to explore De Morgan’s legacy in the enchanting setting of Blackwell.
Sarah Hardy is a specialist in Victorian Arts & Crafts, with an extensive body of research and publications to her name. Her expertise spans a variety of subjects, including William Morris’ revival of embroidery, the influence of William Blake on the Pre-Raphaelites, and the art of bookbinding at the Kelmscott Press. Most recently, Sarah curated the highly successful touring exhibition Sublime Symmetry for the De Morgan Foundation, where she explores William De Morgan’s innovative use of mathematics in his ceramic designs.
The talk will delve into the mathematical principles which underpin De Morgan’s colourful and elaborate designs featured within the Sublime Symmetry: William De Morgan exhibition, on show at Blackwell until 6 October 2024. The exhibition displays 60 pots, tiles and vases from the De Morgan Collection, plus select pieces from the Lakeland Arts collection, the exhibition includes examples of De Morgan’s Middle Eastern-inspired designs and glistening lustreware.
