Event Details

Eilish Briscoe is an artist and designer from Lancashire, now based in London. Her multidisciplinary practice spans graphic design, printmaking, sculpture and installation, exploring the relationship between art, language and health.

After suffering a stroke aged 25, Eilish experienced aphasia, which affected her ability to communicate through language. During her early recovery, she began collecting samples of her own handwriting. These became the basis for ‘maybe’, a typeface that reflects the uncertainty and challenges of language during this period.

At Abbot Hall, Eilish presents a selection of prints and aluminium sculptures exploring the graphic and sculptural possibilities of letterforms. Together, the works offer an insight into her experience of aphasia and the ways in which language can be understood, experienced and expressed beyond words.
