Searching for family-friendly things to do in the Lake District this May? Windermere Science Festival returns to Windermere Jetty Museum on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May 2026 offering a weekend packed full of exciting science shows, hands-on STEM activities, outdoor adventures and creative workshops for all ages.
Set on the shores of Windermere, this family festival combines science, engineering, nature and exploration in one spectacular lakeside setting. From live performances and fascinating talks by leading science experts to canoe safaris and hands-on activities, there’s plenty to have a go at throughout the weekend.
Whether you’re raising a budding scientist, looking for an unforgettable family day out, or interested in experiencing something a little different, Windermere Science Festival offers something for everyone.

One of the festival’s most anticipated moments returns as handmade cardboard boats take to the water. Please keep in mind this is weather dependant.
Hands-On Activities Throughout the Weekend
Alongside the headline talks and shows, families can explore a wide range of drop-in science, engineering and ecology activities across the museum’s lakeshore grounds.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can have a go at plenty of activities including bushcraft on the beach, experience Ocean VR, experiment with interactive robots, explore how fun maths can be through origami, and take part in the Penny Battery Lab.
Families can also discover pollinator activities with the British Beekeepers Association, and explore the Future Coastlines gaming experience. On Saturday afternoon families can make and launch their own paper creations in our Little Float activity.
Activities take place across the Learning Centre, Eco Zone, Wet Dock and lakeshore grounds, making it easy to explore the festival at your own pace.
Canoe Safari on Windermere
Grab a paddle and head out onto Windermere with freshwater ecologist Dr Ellie Mackay for a family-friendly Canoe Safari adventure. Explore the lake from a whole new perspective as you discover wildlife, ecology and the fascinating science hidden beneath the surface of Windermere.

Heritage Boat Trips
Take a relaxing sail across Windermere aboard Osprey, our beautifully restored 1902 Steam Launch. From the gentle sound of the engine to the ever-changing views of the lake and surrounding fells, it’s a chance to slow down and experience Windermere from a completely different perspective during the festival weekend.
Trips depart at:
10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:45pm, 2:45pm and 3:45pm.
Tickets can be booked online in advance or at the front desk on the day.
